The Super Bowl Halftime Moment That Had Viewers Looking Away
This year’s Pepsi Super Bowl LV halftime show was headlined by The Weeknd, who performed the event’s first ever socially distanced and masked show. He satisfied his fans by performing some of his past and current hit songs such as “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blinding Lights.” But during his performance, The Weeknd took viewers for a big spin and left fans blinded with something else — seeing circles.
Thanks to some clever and quick camera cuts and tricks, the highly anticipated show left some viewers dizzy, and some took to Twitter to voice their concerns. “I’m dizzy #PepsiHalftime,” one user said. Another wrote, “The Weeknd is really talented, his music is really good and deserving of doing halftime. However, that was not a great halftime show. The setup in the concourse left a lot to be desired, especially when he went inside and made everyone dizzy. And the sound mixing was abysmal.”
The Weeknd's halftime show was a dizzy fest
During the halftime show, a singing The Weeknd was seen accompanied by several hundred red-vested and white masked dancers. In “Can’t Feel My Face,” he took hold of the camera inside a neon-lighted hall of mirrors. Throughout his solo, The Weeknd was shaking the camera the entire time, and just before he got to the song’s chorus, the masked dancers joined him in the mirror hall, bumping into each other as the camera continued to shake with their every movement. A sight for dizzy eyes.
But that wasn’t the end of the dizzy show. Then came his closing performance of “Blinding Lights,” which took place on the turf. It started off with The Weeknd dancing along with the dancers, but then an overhead and spinning camera came into the mix. The dancers, who started out in straight lines, abandoned their coordination and started running in circles … and so did the camera. To further add on, the dancers each had lights attached to their hands and started waving their hands around as well. But finally, the dizzyfest came to an end when the Weeknd finished the song with, “I said, ooh, I’m blinded by the lights / No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch” (via YouTube).
